Have you said yes to giving a toast at a wedding? Are you nervous and not sure where to begin? You’re not alone. Public speaking can be nerve racking, but luckily you know this public! However, if you’re still nervous here are a few tips to help you out!
- Introduce yourself. Everyone knows the Bride and Groom but not everyone knows their friends or family. You can start by letting everyone who you are and how you know the couple. It is a very easy way to begin your speech and allows you to roll into the next thing you want to say to the happy couple.
2. Write it out. Type it on your phone or write it on a piece of paper but getting the thoughts and ideas out of your head and written down can be very helpful. This can help keep you on track with what you want to say and will help keep your speech clear and easy to follow for the other guests.
3. Short and Sweet is the way to be. We recommend keeping your toasts between 2 to 4 minutes. Remember yours is important but not the only speech being given. If you have more to say you may want to give a different speech at the rehearsal dinner.
4. Don’t drink too much. We know liquid courage can be helpful in these situations but remember there will most likely be photographers and maybe a videographer. There will be plenty of time to enjoy the cocktails after your toast.
5. If you are still having writers block there are 3 things you can always say. Say something Funny, tell a funny story of one or both in the couple. Say something Sweet, a reminder of how you see the couple. Finish up with something Encouraging to the newly married
6. Avoid making the toast a roast of the bride and groom. Your job isn’t to embarrass your friend, it’s to express your gratitude and love for the opportunity to be part of their new life together.
7. Bring your glass! Having something to toast with yourself is the best way to finish your speech.
